FREDERICTON, NB – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce has awarded its post-secondary scholarships to Erik Staeben and Emma Johnston. Both are Fredericton natives and plan to attend the University of New Brunswick in the fall.

A high academic achiever and committed volunteer, Emma is pursuing a nursing degree with a particular interest in using her credentials in a mission capacity – combining her loves for travel, helping people and making a difference in people’s lives. Emma is a well-rounded individual who also excels in sport, particularly basketball – which has also been a place to practice and demonstrates her excellent leadership skills.

Erik has also excelled in academics and athletics throughout is secondary-school career. In addition to maintaining high grades throughout high school, Erik has turned his talent and determination in the competitive swimming pool into his education and career plan. His dedication to the sport has meant a focus on healthy health and nutrition, which will continue as he pursues a Science and Kinesiology degree at UNB in September.

Administered by the Fredericton Community Foundation, recipients of the scholarship are selected by a panel of Fredericton chamber past-presidents.

“Awarding our post-secondary scholarship is one of the highlights on the year for me and our whole chamber,” added Krista Ross, chamber CEO. “This year our selection committee – comprised of chamber past presidents – selected two recipients as they could not decide between Erik and Emma’s very strong applications.”

The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce’s scholarship was created in 2013 to recognize a deserving student who has made a significant positive contribution to the betterment of their school and / or community at the same time has demonstrated sound academic achievement. The fund is held and managed by the Fredericton Community Foundation.

Erik and Emma received their scholarships at the chamber’s annual golf tournament on August 23, 2018.
